Smallmouth Dawn on Houghton

Jake Morrison Houghton Lake 5 min read July 2026

A first-light run for the best smallmouth bite in northern Michigan.

Houghton Lake is Michigan's largest inland lake, and at dawn in July it belongs entirely to the smallmouth anglers who were smart enough to set their alarms for four-thirty.

Reading the Flats

The smallmouth move onto the shallow flats to feed at first light and pull back to the weed edges as the sun climbs. A drop-shot with a three-inch green-pumpkin worm, worked along the outside edge of the cabbage, is the most reliable pattern on the lake. Keep your boat quiet — these fish spook in skinny water.

“The best smallmouth on Houghton eat in the first hour of light. After that, you're working for them.”

By mid-morning, switch to a deeper weed line or a rocky point and slow way down. Houghton rewards patience: the four-pound fish are here, but they don't come easy. Bring a net, a good pair of polarized glasses, and the willingness to fish one stretch until the lake gives it up.
